Flee, Abstain, Resist

When I was first coming out of pornography and impurity, my plan to resist was radical amputation. I gave my notebook computer away to my pastor. I resisted by cutting off all access to the temptation.

According to verse 9 above, we are not only to resist the devil; we are also to stand firm in the faith. How do we do this? The Bible says that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17). Notice that it doesn’t say “Faith comes by what you heard,” but rather “Faith comes by hearing.” There must be an ongoing “hearing” of God’s Word in order for faith to remain active. So we see that one way to stand firm is to regularly involve ourselves in God’s Word.

Question 8

Finally, verse 9 says that our brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same trials and temptations. Have you ever thought that you were the only one who was sinning in such a horrible manner? Have you ever felt isolated, thinking nobody else would understand?

Not so! All our brothers and sisters get assaulted by the enemy; we are all under attack by evil desires. Our temptations, whatever they may be, no matter how severe or perverted they may be, are “common to man” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

In review: today we learned to flee, abstain and resist. But we also learned to pursue righteousness, live godly lives, and stand firm in the faith. We have learned of the strength of our enemy, and we have thought through some positive actions which will help ensure that we are pursuing righteousness. May our God enable us to do all these!

Thoughts to consider:

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing! Galatians 2:20-21

21 A cry is heard on the barren heights, the weeping and pleading of the people of Israel, because they have perverted their ways and have forgotten the LORD their God. 22 “Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding.” “Yes, we will come to you, for you are the LORD our God. 23 Surely the idolatrous commotion on the hills and mountains is a deception; surely in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel. 24 From our youth shameful gods have consumed the fruits of our fathers’ labor—their flocks and herds, their sons and daughters. 25 Let us lie down in our shame, and let our disgrace cover us. We have sinned against the LORD our God, both we and our fathers; from our youth till this day we have not obeyed the LORD our God. Jeremiah 3:21-25

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.

What does “feasting” mean?

“Feasting” is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ. It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives. It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth. This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God’s Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.

Did you feast on God’s Word in the last 24 hours?

Yes No If so, how did you feast? In other words, how did you enjoy God today? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?

Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?

Yes No Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?

Yes No Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?

Yes No If you answered “no” to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered “yes” to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.

Flee, Abstain, Resist

12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Romans 10:12-13

11 Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. 1 Peter 2:11,12

Question 5

Verse 11 above tells us that we are in a war. Evil wages war against our soul, and we fight internal battles every day. The enemy’s goal is to drag our soul into hell, and he uses “evil desires” to do it. According to verse 11 above, what are we to do with these evil desires?

Abstain Abstaining is the scriptural method for winning the battle against evil desires. We are not to give in, vent, or act out in other ways; we are to abstain from evil desires. In some ways, this is like the “just say no” philosophy the world promotes—but “just say no” is only half the truth. We must go beyond that and abstain, and “live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse us of doing wrong, they may see our good deeds…” This echoes 2 Timothy 2:22, which taught us not only to flee evil desires, but also to pursue righteousness. Both of these concepts must be embraced.

8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 1 Peter 5:8-9

The devil and sin are often described in the Bible as a lion seeking to devour us. This tells us something about the strength of the enemy. Man is no match for a lion, as many martyrs in early church history show. Sin and the devil are very strong, and their purpose is to “devour us.” Consider Genesis 4:7: 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.”

We have a strong enemy, and we have weak flesh. This combination works powerfully together, and can drag us into sin and maul us. I remember times of praying earnestly that I would not give in to the temptation to do sex-chat on the Internet… but as soon as the opportunity presented itself, the desire was overpowering and I immediately gave in. I might be up the entire night indulging the lusts of my flesh, would walk downstairs the next day absolutely exhausted—mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Sin pounced on me and beat me up. As this experience became more and more common in my life, the enemy nearly devoured me.

Question 6

According to verse 9 above, what are we to do with this lion?

resist and stand firm

Question 7

In your own situation, Gary, how will you resist the enemy? Be specific:

Greetings ! This lesson hits the heart of the matter for anyone desiring to be free from pornography, masturbation, and/or sexual impurity. Those who will refuse to have any idols in their lives, who commit to being an ‘exclusive drinker’ of the Living Water, will be completely satisfied in Christ! The apostle Paul said, “’I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:20-21) Paul found such fulfillment in glorifying Jesus Christ that nothing else mattered. His many troubles and difficult circumstances didn’t derail him, because he found everything he needed and desired in the Person of Jesus Christ! Is your life moving in this direction?

Greetings ! Today’s teaching showed us that there is spiritual strength for overcoming habitual sin, if we will confess our sins and turn away from them. David was spiritually lethargic and weak when he was hiding his sin, but after he confessed, he became strong in the Lord. This is the model for us. We must have no unconfessed sin in our lives. James 5:16 shows the connection between confession, spiritual strength and healing: “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” Notice that we are not only to confess our sins to the Lord, but to one another as well. Since all sin is against God, we confess to Him, but some sins are against other people and need to be confessed to those we have offended. If there are people out there that you have hurt by your involvement in P&M or sexual immorality, we encourage you to confess it to them, so that you may gain strength, support and spiritual healing. We understand that this can be a difficult thing to do. It can make you anxious, but the Lord is with you. We can do all things through Christ. (Philippians 4:13) Seek Him as you take this important step, and if you have any questions, please feel free to discuss them with your mentor.

Greetings Friend,

Here is Gary’s daily wrap up for Way of Purity – Day 17.

Greetings ! This teaching emphasized the necessity of returning to the Lord. Pornography and masturbation takes us away from Him and pushes His presence far from us, but as we return to the Lord, He returns to us. This is the message of the entire chapter of Hosea 14. Here’s a portion: “Israel, return to the LORD your God, because your sins have made you fall. Come back to the LORD and say these words to him: ‘Take away all our sin and kindly receive us, and we will keep the promises we made to you.’” (Hosea 14:1-2) “The LORD says, ‘I will forgive them for leaving me and will love them freely, because I am not angry with them anymore.’” (Hosea 14:4) “Israel, have nothing to do with idols. I, the LORD, am the one who answers your prayers and watches over you.” (Hosea 14:8) When you get a few minutes, read through the entire chapter and see what amazing love and grace there is in Him! There is great joy in leaving our idols of P&M and returning to the Lord! Are you following this map to freedom?

Day 22 stressed the need to be vigilant. “Vigilance” means to watch and pray so that we will not fall into temptation. It carries with it the concept of always being on guard, cautious, and watchful, lest we be overtaken by sin. Here is a passage of Scripture which shows the danger of not being vigilant: “Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind imagine confusing things. You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging.” (Proverbs 23:31-34) In maritime days, sailors were sent up the mast to watch for danger, rocks or enemy boats. The verses above describe one who fell asleep on top of the mast, so there was no protection against the enemy. Don’t allow yourself to sleep in sin when you should be watching!

Greetings ! We reviewed today the necessity of running from temptation. The opposite of running is to stick around and engage temptation in a dialogue, or to get close to it, just to see if we are strong enough to resist. This is foolish. We won’t do this too many times before we figure out that we need to run away from temptation, not entertain it! By God’s grace, let’s heed the words of Michal to David: “Saul sent men to David’s house to watch it and to kill him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, warned him, ‘If you don’t run for your life tonight, tomorrow you’ll be killed.’ So Michal let David down through a window, and he fled and escaped.” (1 Samuel 19:11) Oh, may we “run for our lives” and flee and escape when the enemy comes to our door!

Article on self-gratification By Setting Captives Free Executive Director, Shon Bruellman

Q: I am married and at times need to travel for work. I have heard that gratifying my flesh during those times is helpful, as long as I get permission from my spouse and think only of her. Are there circumstances when I am away from my spouse that masturbation is OK? I have found that when I relieve my flesh in this way that it often just makes things more difficult and tempting, so I am leaning toward “No” but just wanted to get your thoughts on this one.

A: This is a good question! This type of counsel sounds good and biblical at first but, when we look to the Word for guidance, I think we will come to a different conclusion about just how helpful this is.

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. Romans 8:5 (ESV)

Self-gratification in any circumstance fixes the mind on the desires of the flesh instead of setting our minds on the things of God. Indulging the flesh in any situation while not in the presence of one’s spouse is always sin, because it does not come from faith. I cannot believe the promises of God to supply my every need (Phil. 4:19), to make a way out of every temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13), to keep me from falling (Jude 24), and also have sex with myself at the same time. Self-gratification says, “Christ is not enough to satisfy me; I must satisfy myself.” Why is the standard for purity any different for a married man when he is away from his wife for a week, month, etc., than for a single man who is called to live a celibate life for years on end?

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:22-24 (ESV)

Taking up our cross and being crucified means sacrificing our flesh, not gratifying it. It means dying to self, not living to please the flesh when the flesh is calling out for pleasure in areas that God has deemed off limits. The cross shows us that we are not to “relieve the pressure” but endure to the point of shedding blood.

1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. Colossians 3:1-25 (ESV)

Stating that self-gratification is acceptable “under certain circumstances” is a denial of the cross of Jesus Christ and it is not “setting our minds on things above.” The truth of the matter is that it is so much easier to totally crucify than to attempt to control, because it is a very slippery slope once we start trying to determine when it is acceptable to gratify the sexual desires within my flesh.

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 (ESV)

Self-gratification when I am alone and away from my spouse is nothing more than “gratification of the desires of the flesh” and the Word says that when we are walking with God we will not please the flesh.

13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 1 Corinthians 10:13-14 (ESV)

This Scripture does not say, “When you are away from your wife for a period of time God has given you the ‘gift’ of self-gratification to release those desires.” No, it says “When tempted to bow down and indulge those sexual desires, trust God and He will give you the grace to bear up under the burning” and then goes on to say, “Don’t give in to those temptations, because it is idolatry.”

1 Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” 2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6 Now as a concession, not a command, I say this. 7 I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another. 8 To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single as I am. 9 But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to be aflame with passion. 1 Corinthians 7:1-40 (ESV)

Here is a passage of Scripture that outlines the boundaries of intimacy, that it is between a husband and wife who are physically in the presence of one another, because verse 5 state, “then come together again…” In verse 9 it states that “those who cannot exercise self control should marry.” What for? Does the act of marriage remove temptation and remove the burning in the flesh? Of course not, it’s speaking of sex within the marriage between the husband and wife; not self-gratification in private. This passage deals with temptation, conjugal rights, and marriage, lest one burn in his passions. One would need to jump through all sorts of exegetical hoops to make say anything about getting permission from a spouse to have sex with himself while away on a trip, or gratifying the flesh in this way when at home and feeling tempted.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV)

Would someone who gratifies his flesh in this manner say to a brother or stand up during testimony time in church and say, “I am soooo thankful for the gift of self-gratification, and I just give God all the praise and glory for it?” I would honestly doubt it.

Even if a man is able to concentrate only on thoughts of his wife while indulging the flesh (and that is a huge “if” because, in the state of arousal, the enemy often tries to throw other images or thoughts into the mind), it is not truly his wife he is thinking of; he is creating a fantasy in which his wife is the “star.” That image in his mind is not his wife; it is a mental picture, and nothing more than an object to lust after in order to have an orgasm. How does that bring glory to God?

I received this from a pastor, who is a student:

God has done amazing things in me. I don’t ever want to fall to the sexual sin of porn or masturbation again, and that is why I have come here to Setting Captives Free. Doing a lesson every day is keeping me accountable in my thoughts daily, and I am grateful for that. A dirty shepherd is most likely going to produce defective sheep, and I don’t want to let God down in the responsibility He has granted me.

This man recognizes that any form of sexual impurity in his life potentially makes him “dirty,” and he wants it all gone from his life.

I hope you are able to see that Scripture is far from silent on the issue of sexual self-gratification, and the dangers of it in any situation. It is a selfish act that does not trust God to deliver one from temptation; it does not show honor to the wife in that her husband would contain his passion until they are reunited, and it is “taking matters into our own hands” with regards to dealing with the burning of the flesh.

Fleeing Temptation

If you study the temptation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3), you will see this same truth illustrated again: the devil kept after Adam and Eve, kept tempting them, kept arguing with them and weakening them with each word. We’ll never win an argument with the devil… and if we hang around long enough arguing, we’ll eventually drum up enough excuses to just go ahead and sin. So how do we win against these pressing temptations?

RUN LIKE THE WIND!

Flee the evil desires of youth. 2 Timothy 2:22

But you, man of God, flee from all this. 1 Timothy 6:11

Question 6

What did Joseph do when Potiphar’s wife was tempting him?

He changed the subject, and began talking with her about the weather. He decided to witness to her, so he sat down on the bed with her and explained the way of salvation. He left his coat and ran! Do you long to be able to look temptation squarely in the face and say, “NO “? Chances are, we’ll never be able to do it. Temptation is more powerful than we are; it is more persistent than we are; and it is more persuasive than we are. Our only hope is to RUN, RUN, RUN. Flee away from it as if it is a burning house. Run from it no matter what the cost. Joseph would rather lose a good coat than a good conscience.

Question 7

What can we learn from the way Joseph handled this temptation?

Course member John wrote, “Yesterday I was at work praising God and having a great time, and all of a sudden images of women were running through my mind. Then the excuses started. I prayed to God and it seemed to get worse. Then, during supper I was getting gas and after I got done paying for it, like some kind of magnet I was at the magazine rack with my heart pumping. I did not take down a porn magazine but, instead, God reminded me that he would always provide a way out of my temptation. At that second, I grabbed a Men’s Health magazine, paid for it, and went to my car. As I got in the car, I felt a bit relieved and let out a yell! I know about the battles in the mind, and I hate them and get very upset when it happens. Thank God he helped me!”

Dear friend, the above story and much of the content of this lesson came from a friend named John who is going through this course. Notice that he ran from temptation. It might not be physical running, but the point is that he got himself away from it. This is no small thing. This is a huge victory! As he continues to develop the habit of running away, he is well on his way to lasting victory. Joseph was thinking of God and he ran. John was thinking of God and he ran. It’s the only way to win.

Course member Dan wrote, “She kept prodding Samson for his secret. It said she ‘prodded him day after day until he was tired to death.’ Temptation can be like that—it keeps prodding and prodding until you almost feel compelled to give in. The pictures that get in my head from one sin prod me until they propagate another sin. It is an endless cycle that can only be broken by God.
Specifically in regard to pornography, the hardest part is trying to clear the pictures out of my head. There have been times when I have fallen and immediately afterward vowed to never do it again. I would pray constantly for strength and I found that as I prayed there were the pictures prodding me again. I would pray to not give in to the temptation to look at pornography on the Internet and, as I did, the pictures of the last time I did it would enter my mind. It made it so I almost didn’t want to pray about it anymore…”

Thoughts to consider:

14 And it will be said: “Build up, build up, prepare the road! Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people. Isaiah 57:14

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Fleeing Temptation

Notice another important element of this story: sin keeps coming after us. Joseph’s master’s wife kept after him—she kept pressing him, kept tempting him. She “spoke to Joseph day after day.”

You’ve probably experienced the same thing with pornography, Gary. The images come at you once, and maybe you are able to pass them off once or twice. But they keep coming back, don’t they? You may send them away again but soon, like Potiphar’s wife, they are begging and pleading with you and tempting you again. Or perhaps you have someone in your life who continues to tempt you to sin—a lust-filled relationship, or someone on whom you’ve become emotionally dependant. Perhaps you have even broken off the relationship, but now they won’t respect your wishes and keep coming after you as Potiphar’s wife did Joseph.

To illustrate the truth that sin keeps pressing us, please read Judges 16: 4-18:

4 Some time later, he fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah. 5 The rulers of the Philistines went to her and said, “See if you can lure him into showing you the secret of his great strength and how we can overpower him so we may tie him up and subdue him. Each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels of silver.”
6 So Delilah said to Samson, “Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued.”
7 Samson answered her, “If anyone ties me with seven fresh thongs that have not been dried, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”
8 Then the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh thongs that had not been dried, and she tied him with them. 9 With men hidden in the room, she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” But he snapped the thongs as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered.
10 Then Delilah said to Samson, “You have made a fool of me; you lied to me. Come now, tell me how you can be tied.”
11 He said, “If anyone ties me securely with new ropes that have never been used, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”
12 So Delilah took new ropes and tied him with them. Then, with men hidden in the room, she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” But he snapped the ropes off his arms as if they were threads.
Delilah then said to Samson, “Until now, you have been making a fool of me and lying to me. Tell me how you can be tied.”
He replied, “If you weave the seven braids of my head into the fabric on the loom and tighten it with the pin, I’ll become as weak as any other man.” So while he was sleeping, Delilah took the seven braids of his head, wove them into the fabric 14 and tightened it with the pin.
Again she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” He awoke from his sleep and pulled up the pin and the loom, with the fabric.
15 Then she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when you won’t confide in me? This is the third time you have made a fool of me and haven’t told me the secret of your great strength.” 16 With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was tired to death.
17 So he told her everything. “No razor has ever been used on my head,” he said, “because I have been a Nazirite set apart to God since birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.”

18 When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, “Come back once more; he has told me everything.” So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands. Judges 16: 4-18

Question 4

What did Delilah keep doing to Samson? How is that an illustration of the way sin presses us?

Course member Marc wrote, “She constantly tempted Sampson by saying, ‘you don’t really love me, you won’t tell me your secret of strength, look at all I do for you, I love you, but you reject me. Oh, and by the way, ignore those guys who try to bind you every time you tell me something, they don’t mean anything.’ Sometimes you just have to wonder about God’s chosen heroes. Sampson certainly was proud—because no one can be that stupid.”

Question 5

Share an experience you’ve had in which temptation kept after you.
